QR Codes
One new year’s resolution that should be on everyone’s list is to be vigilant about cybersecurity. Technology is constantly evolving, and it is tough to keep up, but it is important to stay up to date on the latest scams, so you don’t become a victim.
Use of QR codes have been on the rise over the last few years. A QR code is a barcode that can be scanned using your smartphone’s camera to direct customers to their websites or digital content. Reputable companies use them for legitimate reasons, such as a restaurant using a QR code to allow diners to view their menu. However, scammers can hide harmful links in QR codes to steal your information or put malware on your device. The Better Business Bureau posted an informative article on their website titled, “BBB Scam Alert: Fraudulent QR codes continue to be used in a variety of scams.” See below for a couple of scams they discussed:
Parking meter payment – A fraudulent sticker with a QR code is placed over the legitimate code. You scan the QR code and enter your credit card information thinking you are paying for parking. Instead, you have paid the fraudster, and they now have your credit card information.
Phishing scams – Some phishing attempts begin with a notification of “suspicious activity” or “undeliverable package.” If you scan the QR code it takes you to a website or download that will infect your device with malware.
What should you do?
Pay for parking directly through the meter using your credit card.
Check the code for tampering. Most businesses permanently install their codes using laminate or placing behind glass.
Verify the QR code is legitimate before scanning.
Do not open links from strangers.
Be wary of short links.
