Tax Season
Tax Season 2025
Tax season is once again upon us and once again scammers are hoping to trick you into falling for one of their scams. Below are some reminders on how to stay safe this season:
· Get an identity protection PIN (IP PIN), which is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN). Once you have obtained one, each year you will need to retrieve your IP PIN from your online account. It is generally available mid-January through mid-November.
· The IRS typically only communicates through regular mail delivered by the US Postal Service.
· If you receive a letter or form from the IRS, go to www.irs.gov and run a search to see if it is legitimate.
· The IRS does not call to demand payment, and they will never request payment by gift cards.
· The IRS does not threaten to bring in local police or immigration officers to have you arrested.
· The IRS cannot revoke your driver’s license.
· If you receive a phone call – hang up and go to www.irs.gov for a legitimate phone number to call to see if the IRS was really trying to call you.
· Do not get tax advice from social media. Last year many taxpayers believed information on social media, which led them to file inaccurate tax returns. They ended up needing to hire a trusted tax professional to file an amended return.
· The IRS does not contact you or take payment on social media.
· For more information and common tax scams to watch out for go to www.irs.gov. Remember to check the address to make sure you are on the official website and look for any misspellings and HTTPS at the beginning.
