Identity Theft and Fraud
Identity theft and fraud are topics we have all heard about. Many people think it will never happen to them. However, you may be at risk of identity theft or fraud without even knowing it. Hackers and scammers are always finding new ways to try to get into your accounts. Below are some steps you can take to better protect yourself.
· Passwords: Create a unique, long password for each of your accounts.
· Social Media: Do not share a lot of personal information on social media.
· Unsolicited Emails and Texts: Never click on links or open attachments from unsolicited communications. These could be phishing attempts to get your personal information. If you think it is a legitimate communication, contact the person or company using a known phone number.
· Unsolicited Phone Calls: Let the call go to voice mail. If they leave a message and you think it might be legitimate, call the phone number listed on the organization’s official website.
· Credit Reports: Check your credit reports regularly. Look for any suspicious activity.
· Public Wi-Fi: Do not use public Wi-Fi. Use a hotspot or a VPN.
· Parental Controls: If you have minor children check their privacy settings on social media, look at options for internet controls, and discuss these topics with them to better protect them.
