February Cyber Tip
We often see the same type of tax scams year after year because they are successful. Below are some things to keep in mind so you do not fall victim to a tax-based scam.
The IRS typically only communicates through regular mail delivered by the US Postal Service.
The IRS does not call to demand payment, and they will never request payment by gift cards.
The IRS does not threaten to bring in local police or immigration officers to have you arrested.
The IRS cannot revoke your driver’s license.
If you receive an email claiming to be from the IRS delete it – do not reply, do not click on any links, or open any attachments.
If you receive a phone call – hang up and go to irs.gov for a legitimate phone number to call to see if the IRS was really trying to call you.
If you receive a form or a letter from the IRS, go to irs.gov and run a search on the forms tab to see if it is legitimate.
