World Password Day was May 2nd and we thought this would be a great time to remind you to review and refresh your passwords. Although passwords have been around for a long time, hackers are still finding ways to get around them. Below are a few tips to help protect your passwords from becoming compromised so that your personal data and information can stay safe.
- Create passwords that are long, complex, and unique. They should be at least 12 characters long and have numbers, symbols, upper-case letters, and lower-case letters.
- Enable and use multi-factor authentication, when possible, to add another layer of protection when logging into your accounts.
- Enable biometric identity authentication, which requires recognition of physical characteristics to verify identity, like face I.D.
- Update old passwords to ensure they meet the suggestions above.
- Do not reuse passwords for several accounts. If that one password becomes compromised, then all those accounts with that password are at risk.
- Use a secure password manager to store your passwords. These managers help you generate strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts. They can also alert you to which of your passwords need to be changed.
